Our Mission
is to advance understanding of politics and policy through research, discussion and interactions.
As scholars, we strive to push the boundaries of knowledge through original research. As teachers, we engage students with issues, concepts and skills to generate broad-based knowledge. As community members, we encourage all to think critically, question the expected, and contribute an informed discussion to politics and public life. We believe in learning about the world around us, thinking critically about issues, and communicating clearly and persuasively.
Our History
Political Science has been part of Idaho State University since its early days as the Academy of Idaho. Founded in 1901, the department grew alongside the university, granting its first B.A. in Political Science in 1947. Over decades, faculty leaders and alumni have shaped political discourse locally and nationally. Today, we continue this legacy with diverse programs and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement.

Idaho State University’s Political Science department is a regional leader in educating future public servants, policy analysts, and scholars. With a 120+ student body and dedicated faculty, we provide rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs, including the unique Doctor of Arts degree.

Our graduates thrive in local, national, and international careers, impacting communities and policy worldwide.
Political Science is about understanding power: how it’s gained, used, and challenged in our communities, our country, and across the globe. At Idaho State University, you’ll explore the systems that shape our lives: how governments operate, how policies are made, and how people organize to create change.
Because Political Science connects to nearly every part of society, it’s an excellent foundation for countless career paths, not only in law or politics, but also in business, public service, education, communications, and nonprofit work. Our program will prepare you with strong critical thinking, research, and leadership skills that prepare you to make informed decisions and lead effectively in any field.
Our program also offers strong support for students interested in law. With a dedicated pre-law advisor who holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, you’ll have expert guidance as you prepare for law school and beyond.
Whether you want to shape public policy, lead an organization, or simply better understand the world around you, Political Science at ISU gives you the foundation to make an impact.
