Jumping Chain

1F30.00 -1

PIRA: 1F30.00

Overview:

When the chain is tugged, you are changing its inertial state. The chain has its initial upward velocity before changing direction to fall to the floor. That upward velocity has inertia with it, and it translates to the parts of the chain that are still resting in the beaker.

Materials:

Jumping chain in its beaker.

Setup:

Put the beaker on something high. A ladder is preferred.

How to:

Hold onto the end of the chain. Move it rapidly upwards then down towards the floor and let go.

Safety:

Make sure the beaker does not fall and either break or land on someone.
