Centripetal Candles

Overview:

Some properties of centrifugal force are shown by spinning two candles around in a circle. When this happens, the flames move inward towards the center of spin because the more dense cool air moves outward, while the less dense hot air is forced inward.

Materials:

Rotating platform, candles, glass chimneys, lighter

Setup:

Put the rotating platform onto a table where it is able to spin freely without any obstruction. Put the candles on the platform if they are not already on it. Put the glass chimneys over the candles.

How to:

Light the candles with the lighter, and then spin the platform. It must spin slowly enough that an observer can see the candle flame moving inwards, but fast enough that the candle flames have a noticeable effect.

Safety:

The flames are hot, and can heat up the glass chimney when in use. Do not spin the platform too fast.
