Broken Ring

Overview:

When an object is no longer subject to rotational forces, it will move in a straight line. With this demo, it is possible to see the straight line movement of a ball after it has left the ring.

Materials:

3D printed variable circles, small and dense ball (mouse ball).

Setup:

Place the ball inside the ring on a table

How to:

Open the circle to the size you want it. Then accelerate the ball by either rolling it or using the circle. Make sure the ring doesn’t move when the ball is close to the edge. Watch the direction the ball goes after the ring no longer has an influence on it.

Safety:

Do not swing the ball too hard.
