The Idaho State University Athletics Department is proud to announce the official unveiling of the Papenberg Hall of Champions, a new permanent installation designed to celebrate the legacy and achievements of Bengal Athletics. The Papenberg Hall of Champions — appropriately named in honor of the project’s lead benefactors, the late Don and Sylvia Papenberg — is located in the ICCU Bengal Alumni Center. The focal point of the facility, the floor-to-ceiling display is situated in the front corridor just outside of the reception hall and honors the individuals and teams who have defined ISU’s rich sports history.

“The Papenberg Hall of Champions is more than a tribute, it is a living celebration of the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped Bengal Athletics. We are honored to recognize the incredible legacy of our student-athletes, coaches, and supporters in such a meaningful and enduring way. This space will inspire generations to come, just as the Papenbergs inspired us with their deep love for and commitment to Idaho State,” said ISU Director of Athletics Pauline Thiros.

The Hall of Champions features dual 65-inch touchscreen displays, where guests can explore profiles of Sports Hall of Fame inductees, team and individual conference champions, academic and athletic All-Americans, and Bengals who advanced to the professional level.

Additional highlights include:

  • A dedicated tribute to the 1981 I-AA National Championship Football Team

  • The Stephenson Gallery, honoring influential ISU administrators and named for the late Ron Stephenson, with philanthropic support from Barbara Schenk

  • Rotating plaques celebrating each year’s Sports Hall of Fame inductees

Alumni, fans, and community members are invited to attend a formal unveiling of the Papenberg Hall of Champions on Saturday, September 20, at 1:30 p.m., ahead of the football team’s 2025 home opener against Lincoln University (CA) which will kick off at 4 p.m. in the ICCU Dome. Remarks will be made by President Wagner and Thiros, followed by exclusive first access to the space.
