Dr. Jennifer McDonald Honored with 2025 Area of Excellence Award for Fostering a Culture of Care

May 15, 2025

The College of Arts and Letters has named Dr. Jennifer McDonald, lecturer in the Department of Psychology, as the recipient of the 2025 Area of Excellence Award.

Selected annually by the College Executive Committee, the Area of Excellence Award honors one faculty member who models excellence in alignment with a rotating theme. This year, nominees of the theme, “fostering a culture of care,” were considered for their efforts in cultivating a supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff.

“Whether through teaching, mentoring, collaboration, or modeling care for others, this year’s recipient exemplifies these values in everything she does,” Dean of the college, Dr. Kandi Turley Ames says. “Jennifer’s daily actions help make our college a more compassionate and connected place.”

Dr. McDonald was nominated for her extraordinary service and leadership following the unexpected passing of her colleague, Dr. Tera Letzring. In a time of collective mourning, and despite her own grief, Dr. McDonald stepped up to mentor students, co-teach a graduate course, and supervise theses projects, all beyond her lecturer responsibilities.

Additionally, she has been a tireless advocate for faculty and student well-being, co-chairing the department's self-care committee, and supporting the creation of the Letzring Lounge as a wellness space dedicated for reflection and restoration. Her selflessness and dedication have had a profound impact on the department’s morale and success.

In his nomination letter, Chair of the Department of Psychology, Dr. Joshua Swift wrote:

"I have personally observed several small acts from Jennifer to aid in the well-being of others. She cares deeply that students in our programs are getting their needs met. To quote one faculty member in our department, ‘the well-being of students, faculty, the experimental program, and our department as a whole would have fallen apart if not for Jen.’ When I think of someone at ISU who consistently looks out for the well-being of others, I think of Jennifer. Faculty, staff, and students in our department are happier and healthier because of her."

Faculty, staff, and students alike have credited Dr. McDonald with creating a more connected and resilient department. Her example of service, empathy, and care embodies the spirit of this year’s award. Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer McDonald on this well-deserved recognition.
