ISU Hosts 40th Annual Choral Invitational Festival with Guest Conductor Jake Runestad
October 2, 2025

The Idaho State University School of Performing Arts will welcome more than 400 high school singers from 11 choirs across Idaho for the 40th Annual Choral Invitational Festival, held October 10–11 at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. The festival culminates in a final concert on Saturday, October 11 at 7 p.m. in Jensen Grand Concert Hall.
“Imagine 400+ high school students on stage singing with a famous guest conductor,” said Dr. Jeffrey Francom, director of choral activities. “This year’s guest, Jake Runestad, is an internationally renowned composer whose music connects deeply to issues of mental health and wellbeing. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students.”
High school choirs will travel from across the state, including Rexburg, Twin Falls, and Marsh Valley. On Friday, each choir will work directly with Runestad and participate in clinics and masterclasses led by ISU voice faculty members Jenna McLean, Diana Livingston Friedley, and Geoffrey Friedley.
“This festival is unique because it involves entire choirs, not just selected individuals,” Francom noted. “It’s also an honor to host Jake Runestad — never before have we had a composer as well-known as him at this festival. Jensen Grand Hall is one of the top performing venues in the country, making this an unforgettable experience for the students and audiences alike.”
In addition to the high school ensembles, ISU’s own choirs will take the stage during the Saturday evening concert. ISU students also play a vital role in running the event, managing logistics, organizing food and traffic flow, and assisting the guest choirs.
Beyond the music, Francom emphasized the festival’s deeper impact. “Our hope is that audiences will recognize the beauty of today’s youth, despite what we often see on social media and the news. There is so much good in the world, and it will be reflected in the students performing on stage.”
