ISU College of Technology Receives Donation to Support Student Safety in Welding Program
September 2, 2025

The Idaho State University College of Technology has received a transformative gift to its welding program that will enhance student safety and success.
A longtime supporter of the program, who wishes to remain anonymous, has funded a personal air respirator protection (PAPR) hood for every student.
This year’s donation, valued at more than $80,000, provides students with critical safety equipment that meets industry standards and instills professional practices from day one.
“A gift like this is huge for our students. Most of our graduates will weld on stainless steel and other exotic metals daily in industry. These PAPR welding masks will help protect against the constant danger of hexavalent chromium and other gases released by these metals. Working with Norco and donations like this ensures our students are trained with the highest-quality equipment,” said Lucas Bloxham, College of Technology welding program coordinator.
The donation will be celebrated during the upcoming Gregory T. McHaley Safety Days — sponsored by Norco, scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Eames Complex. The event, previously known as Norco-ISU Safety Days, has been renamed to honor Gregory T. McHaley, a welding graduate whose legacy continues to impact industry and education.
The name change was proposed in collaboration with Joey Vail, Norco’s regional representative, and endorsed by Rob Silva, Norco’s new executive vice president. Norco has long championed student safety and technical education, and the renaming reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to honoring excellence in safety and service.
“Renaming Safety Days to honor Gregory T. McHaley is a meaningful tribute that reflects Norco’s deep commitment to safety. Gregory was a respected welder and graduate of ISU’s welding program, known for his dedication to his craft and passion for safety. By highlighting his achievements and values, Norco hopes to inspire young tradespeople to pursue excellence and prioritize safety in their careers,” said Vail.
The Safety Days event brings together students, faculty and industry representatives to emphasize best practices, showcase current technologies and celebrate the partnerships that make ISU’s programs among the best in the region.
