Idaho Premiere of Jon Armstrong’s Voluntary Breath
October 16, 2025
The 2025–26 Idaho State Civic Symphony (ISCS) season opened on Friday, September 26 with a powerful and deeply personal Idaho premiere: Voluntary Breath, a saxophone concerto composed and performed by Jonathan Armstrong, Professor of Music and Commercial Music Area Coordinator for Idaho State University.
Armstrong took the stage at Jensen Hall as soloist on tenor saxophone, performing his original concerto alongside the ISCS to a packed house. The evening opened with a touching acknowledgement of healthcare workers in the audience, and remarks by Elizabeth O’Donnell, MD, who cared for Armstrong’s son in the NICU before his transfer to Utah for specialized care.
Supported by a sabbatical from ISU’s College of Arts and Letters, Voluntary Breath was composed over two years and inspired by Armstrong’s experience as a parent of a child, Breen Armstrong, who spent nine months in the NICU.
The three-part work weaves together lullabies sung to his premature son, rhythmic transcriptions of the life-saving machines that kept him alive, and healing melodies, reflecting the dual power of love and technology in his son’s survival. The piece serves to transform the hospital experience and the support of family, friends, and the medical professionals who cared for Breen, into music. The concerto builds from soothing melodic lines to heart-pounding rhythmic intensity, before merging the two worlds into a moving finale.
The emotional journey resonated with the audience, who were invited to participate at the opening and closing of the piece, by adding their voices to a communal hum, and who rose for a sustained standing ovation at the conclusion of the piece. Armstrong’s son, Breen, now an energetic four-year-old, joined his father on stage for the curtain call, bringing the story full circle.
Originally commissioned by former ISCS conductor Grant Harville, Voluntary Breath premiered earlier this year with the Great Falls Symphony in Montana. Bringing the piece home to Idaho, where Armstrong has taught since 2015, marked a significant artistic milestone.
The Idaho premiere of Voluntary Breath set a powerful tone for the Symphony’s new season, one that celebrates creativity, community, and the courage to transform personal experience into art.
