BA in Global Studies & Communication (Public Relations)
Mica Kankolongo is a senior at ISU, where she studies Global Studies and Communication with a focus on Public Relations. She chose to pursue Global Studies for its flexibility and for how it brings politics, culture, and society into conversation on a global scale. For her, the program is a pathway to understanding the world beyond her immediate environment and using that knowledge to uplift overlooked and disadvantaged people.
Throughout her time at ISU, the Global Studies program has challenged her to think deeply about global interconnections, from politics and economics to migration and humanitarian issues. It has shaped her awareness of global inequalities and strengthened her commitment to contributing positively to the world around her.
Mica is actively engaged across campus. She’s involved with ASISU, works with the Students Activities Board, interns at the Museum of Clean, and is part of the International Students Association, all within the same academic year. These experiences have provided her with hands-on learning experiences, strengthened her leadership skills, and given her a sense of belonging. They’ve also empowered her confidence to pursue a global career.
After graduation, Mica hopes to attend law school to study international law. If that does not work out, she plans to pursue graduate studies in public affairs or policy in preparation for a diplomatic or international career. She credits the Global Studies program with helping her think across borders and systems and giving her the adaptability and global awareness needed to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
Before coming to ISU three years ago, Mica had never traveled outside her country. That move not only marked her first time abroad but also shaped how she experiences and contributes to the Global Studies program. As an international student, her insights add depth to classroom conversations, and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices speaks to the heart of what the Global Studies program at ISU is all about.
