Graduate Degrees in Geosciences
Our goal is to produce graduates with professional skills for future employment and for further graduate studies. The desired skills are the ability to think critically and communicate effectively at the professional level as well as prepare complete geologic investigations.
To achieve these goals the coursework, laboratory experiences, field exercises and research opportunities provide you with a professional interactive environment that improves your opportunities to enter successful careers in geosciences and related fields.
Your course of study will be determined in consultation with advisors. Continued enrollment in the program is contingent upon maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
If you are interested in a Graduate Assistantship or Research Assistantship please submit your application by January 15th.
Based on need, application fee waivers are available at the discretion of the department. Contact your intended advisor to discuss your interests and the availability of the waiver.

Important note about AI usage: Applicants should be aware that the Department of Geosciences at Idaho State University considers the use of generative AI in homework submissions, thesis/dissertation documents, and other student scholarly work to be plagiarism, a violation of the student code of conduct, and merits sanctions ranging from reduced grades to dismissal from the program. In keeping with this philosophy, application materials for our graduate programs will be evaluated using an AI detector. High AI detection scores may be used to remove candidates from further consideration. We acknowledge that AI detection tools are imperfect, and we strongly recommend that applicants check their own work prior to submission to ensure that it passes an AI detection test.
