It's easy to feel like you need to join a gym or commit to a grueling workout schedule to be healthy. The truth is, moving your body just a little bit every day can make a huge difference. If you've been feeling stuck at your desk, this one's for you.
What Counts as Activity?
Activity doesn't have to be a major event. Instead of a daunting mountain to climb, think of it as a series of small, enjoyable hills. The goal is to get your body moving and elevate your heart rate, and there are many ways to do it.
- Take a brisk walk. Grab a friend, a podcast, or just some fresh air, and take a walk around your neighborhood.
- Ditch the elevator. Opt for the stairs whenever you can. That quick climb is a simple way to get your heart pumping and muscles working.
- Play a game. Whether it's a pickup game of basketball or a round of tag with the kids, a little fun can go a long way.
- Find what you love. The key is to find something you enjoy. If it feels like a chore, you won't stick with it.
Break Up Your Movement
For many of us, the 30- or 60-minute recommendations for activity can feel impossible. But who said it all has to be done at once? Breaking up your activity into smaller segments is just as effective.
Try setting a timer for 10 minutes and moving around your home or office. Do some stretches, walk around the block, or use some hand weights for a few reps. Those mini-breaks add up over the course of the day!
The Feel-Good Benefits of Moving More
Beyond the basics of burning calories, a little activity can positively impact your body and mind in surprising ways.
- Sleep better: Ever notice how a day spent on your feet makes you sleep soundly? Regular activity can help you fall asleep faster and get more restful sleep.
- Maintain muscle strength: As we age, maintaining muscle mass becomes crucial. Simple, regular movement is an excellent way to keep your muscles strong and prevent stiffness.
- Boost your mood: Getting your body moving releases endorphins, which can improve your mental outlook and give you a more positive perspective.
Your Challenge: Get Up and Move!
So, are you ready to get moving? It doesn't have to be a massive lifestyle change. Just start with one small choice today. Take the stairs. Go for a quick walk after lunch. Park further away to get a few extra steps. Set an alarm to remind you to stand and stretch.
Every small choice in favor of being active is a win for your health. And remember, all those small choices add up to better health and a happier you!
