Advising Is Important
Academic advising is a key part of Idaho State University's commitment to helping students achieve academic success. Advisors communicate accurate and timely information about degree programs, courses, resources, university policies and procedures, and career opportunities intended to help students achieve their educational goals. Students should meet with an advisor every semester to:
- Understand and clarify degree requirements
 - Develop and maintain a Major Academic Plan of Study
 - Monitor academic progress toward graduation
 - Identify available university resources
 - Assist with petitions and appeals

Choose Your Track
Students deciding their major should research majors and associated Careers. It helps to connect with resources that identify personal strengths and interests. Declare a major by your sophomore year and Stay on Track to graduation.
Students use Degree Works (degree audit tool) to review curriculum requirements for a chosen major. The catalog year of acceptance to ISU is the default.
Graduation degree requirements are determined by the academic undergraduate catalog year identified by the major advisor when a student officially declares their major and is accepted into a program. This happens during the Curriculum Change Request (CCR) process.
Stay On Track
The best way to stay on track to graduation is to meet with your advisor. Schedule a one-on-one appointment, in-person or over the phone, to discuss individual concerns, questions, and find help with:
- Development of an educational plan (MAP) that can be revisited and adjusted as necessary
 - Evaluation of academic and personal goals
 - Discussion of preferences, options, and any confusing issues that arise
 - Strategies for maintaining a healthy GPA
 - Reviewing any academic problems, identifying causes, resolutions, and avoidance strategies

To graduate in four years, students must take at least 15 credits each fall and spring semester or 30 credit hours each academic year. Review the credit hours needed to graduate and then work with your major advisor to create a MAP with the necessary courses needed each semester until graduation.
Get Back On Track
Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better to remain in good academic standing and graduate from ISU. Be aware that majors in several academic departments have a higher minimum GPA requirement.
Students receiving notification of academic warning or probation should immediately review the academic probation guidelines meet with their academic advisor to discuss their path moving forward.
- Freshman, sophomores, and students who have not declared a major should contact their academic advisor.
 - Students with declared majors should contact their major or primary advisor.

Office of Academic Advising provides general academic advising services and support for ISU students, faculty, and staff. Priority advising is available for freshmen, sophomores, transfer students, students on probation, and pre-Social Work majors. Academic Advising can also help students decide and declare their major.
